Congrats to Avatar for passing the 600 gajillion dollar mark or whatever it's up to now. Is there a limit to how much this movie will make? I don't see any signs of the numbers drying up soon as it continues to be a phenomenon.
But is it a good to great movie? Well, my opinion is a wholehearted Yes andKinda. The Yes comes from the pure enjoyment aspect of watching the movie. I loved the detail that went into creating Pandora. The 3D was enjoyable with some stunning scenes. The opening scene of the movie with the people waking up in their pods was astounding and was the first movie scene that made me go Wow in some time. So there was a lot to enjoy in this movie. And I definitely felt that I got my money's worth both times I went to see it.
However, I don't think that it will be all that great when people re-watch the movie in 10-20 years. By that time, some other technological and graphical achievement will be in the theaters that will make us look at Avatar the same way we look at the Jurassic Park movie these days. It's not the same with some other big budget special effect movies such as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. The stories of these movies help make them enjoyable and give them shelf life way past their effects date. I'm just not sure that Avatar has that.
In comic news, today's joke is probably the most groan-inducing joke that I've ever written here at Business Casual. But it was a joke that I thought was so bad that after mulling it over a while in my head, it just started becoming funny to me. So, I just had to do it.
